U.S. automakers criticize Brazil's tariff hike

The Detroit News -- U.S. automakers sharply criticized Brazil's decision to raise tariffs on American exports, including autos and auto parts.

Brazil said this week it would hike tariffs on more than 100 exports worth nearly $240 million as it seeks to force the United States to halt cotton subsidies. In August, the World Trade Organization gave Brazil approval to impose sanctions.

The move would boost tariffs on autos from 35 percent to 50 percent.

Brazil gave the United States one month to reach a deal to head off the tariffs before they take effect.

Detroit's Big Three automakers issued a statement criticizing the tariff move through the American Automotive Policy Council and urged a resolution.

Wow!

Imagine That!

A Tariff on imported goods? Brazil is obviously protecting its own economy and its own industries.

Can anyone say... "Impose Tariffs on Chinese manufactured goods?"

The US has been gradually raising the tariffs on everything coming into the US under the auspice of protecting American jobs. The only problem is the other countries then turn around and raise their tariffs which makes US made products less attractive and hurt our industries even more than if we hadn't raised them.

How can a protectionist country like the USA critize another country for being a protectionist. Tit for tat. Nobody should be getting susidies or bailouts either.

Tariffs should only be used to create fair trading. If a country produces a product that uses labor that is substandard to our way of living then I believe they are for the most part ok. Of course they will mean higher cost for consumers but jobs wouldn't be leaving the US for cheaper labor.

We need to stop all subsidies. Is BHO going to criticize them now for being greedy? Probably not, we are the ones that are arrogant and greedy and deserve it. The world smells weakness in our young, inexperienced President and every country is going to exploit that weakness.

Buy American but from small companies not the Unions. America looses power as American Consumers buy cheap foreign goods, mostly from China, and we sell our economic soul as the world steps up and takes us over.

Brazil received approval from the WTO to impose these sanctions so the USA needs to look at their own policies and see why they are protecting the American Cotton industry.

TRADE restrictions go both ways; didn't USA curtail ethanol from Brazil because they used slave labor to cut their sugar cane; and clean cut forests to have more ground to plant sugar cane intended for ethanol production? Our weak ass US dollar should have our products flying out of here to return some of those weak dollars to the USA.

When the under dog start smelling weakness, they start to make a move. It's been that way throughout our world history. It happened to end Romans empire, Ottoman Empire, etc.

But Good news is daylight saving time is just a week away.

The US should not be subsidizing cotton (more waste of taxpayer $$$). The US should reduce the funding that is being made to the UN as well. The money is needed at home to create jobs. Other countries need to start providing more.

POLELANE:

You know, of course, that would include the United State Military. We are also government employees.

Yes, Teslukba, let them have Toyotas! ha ha.

Just 2695 cars exported to Brazil last year. No biggie. Most of the American cars for the Brazilian market are made in Brazil or Mexico. The rich Brazilians who bought the 2695 American made cars last year probably won't bat an eye to pay a few more thousand dollars for the Tahoes, Escalades or Grand Cherokees or whatever they bought.
